Small construction businesses may be wondering how to continue to operate during a time where social distancing and other measures make it difficult to interact with employees, clients and contractors. There are many accessible resources available to small businesses to buffer the effects of COVID-19 on their operations.  We have compiled the following list for your convenience.

Communicating with Teams

It is imperative to stay connected while practising social distancing.  Cloud based software such as Zoom and Slack are great tools that companies can use to keep in touch with employees, clients and contractors via video and web conferencing.  Microsoft teams can also be used to connect with others. Smaller companies can take advantage of the basic levels, which are usually free.

Communicating with Clients

The key to effective communication is to keep employees, clients and contractors informed of any change in operations in a timely fashion. Businesses can provide them with electronic updates on information relevant to them. User friendly software such as Constant Contact and Mailchimp help small businesses easily connect with employees, clients and contractors through email and keep information flowing. Maintaining ongoing communication during the pandemic will provide for a hopefully seamless transition once normal business operations resume.

Project Management – Due Dates

The proper execution of a project involves effectively managing time, cost and quality. Project management is especially critical for contractors who are juggling competing deadlines. There is software available to organize workflow and coordinate tasks among people. Employers can easily assign tasks to employees with deadlines and reminders. This software is available for a low monthly fee.

Examples of this type of software include:

Accounting Software – More than just accounting!

Small construction businesses may wish to consider whether their current process for invoicing clients and taking payment avoids unnecessary red tape and makes it easier to collect payment. There is a variety of accounting software available.

For example, FreshBooks is an accounting software company that uses a web-based software as a service model. Instead of installing and maintaining software on-site, the software is accessed through a desktop or mobile device. It allows businesses to keep track of their billable hours and invoice clients. Payment is made online via credit card, and therefore, no paperwork is required.  The software can be used to follow up with clients, manage projects/invoicing and track expenses and time.  There are other products available on the market, including:
